no way! use a condenser. a cheap one is that audio technica at2020. $99. i HAVE IT, AND ITS GREAT

You can use it, it will work and I've had to do it before, but if at all possible USE A HANDHELD. The sound quality is much better and it sounds much more full. Lapels are optimized for the dynamic range of the spoken voice, not for singing (which has a much wider range).
