camcorder mike

I have a Canon ZR 800 for classroom use (Low Budget!) and have not been able find an external microphone. I replaced the previous camcorder because this has the connection. No one that I can find knows anything locally. thanks,

cheap plug and play condenser microphones
by: Anonymous

This page suggests a couple of microphones http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/480667-REG/Canon__ZR_800_Mini_DV_Camcorder.html
It seems that they are "plug in power" condenser micrphones. This means that large karaoke/vocalists "dynamic" microphone" will probably not have enough output. Condenser microphones give a higher output, but they require power. This camera gives out some power which flows through the condenser microphone, and this particular type is called "plug in power," so for the chepeast solution, look for a microphone (such as tie clip microphone) which says "plug in power" on the box - these can be had for about 20USD such as

If you want something cheap and more directional then the audio technica mini gun microphone AT9643 is also an option but it may not be availabe in the USA. If you want to record the whole classroom then you will be able to find a cheap microphone, but there are not many directional condenser microphones, for interviews, unless you pay more.
Condenser microphones with internal batteries will also probably be okay. The second microphone on the page above is that type. But they are usually a bit more expensive.
