External microphone for JVC camcorda

My daughter wants to record her group playing with a SONY microphone - with a 3.5 mm plug and internal battery power - she wants the camcorda on a tripod a few 10's feet away.

The newest JVC camcordas say they have a 3.5 mm AV in socket - will this take a microphone or is this just powerr?

The only camcorda JVC lists as being able to take a microphone is the expensive GZ-MG555. Is this just because this has a place to attach the JVC microphone? or does the show take the microphone signal?

We used the microphone on a 5 year old SONY camcorda but it seems no SONY has a mic in capability any more.

Advice appreciated - which inexpensive camcorda offers mic in capabilities?
