General Microphone Use

We have a part area in which we use a microphone and 4 speakers. The problem is a lot of the announcements are made by people of senior age and no experience of useing a mic, or of speaking in public. What would you recommend to get the best low distorion mic. Often people put their mouths up to the mic and speak louder than usual so they can be heard.
