how to make a karaoke mic work.

Hi, I must be a total idiot, but...

I can't seem to figure out how my karaoke mic, which didn't come with instructions, works. It plugs into my receiver, but I have no idea how to get it to work. Does it need to be tuned to a specific station? Or do they only work with amplifiers or karaoke machines?
