karaoke mic with non-karaoke songs?

Can I plug in a karaoke mic to my tuner and sing with the music on my ipod? Will the mic turn down the vocals on the song to hear the mic or not? I don't care about the words being displayed. I just didn't know if plugging in a mic would turn off the music completely if it wasn't a karaoke song.
