Microphones are Not All the Same?

I got this iktv karaoke microphone because I thought I could use it with my system. this mic has built in controls in the mic. Not only an on off switch but controls to use as a remote for the IKTV karaoke system. But when I plug it in to my karaoke machine it just buzzes can't talk into it. Why can't I use the Mic on my karaoke machine, Now I don't expect to be able to use the controls just the mic...anyone know why?
