Special Software and Microphone for Karaoke

My daughter received a DVD with a karoake feature. The main vocals are suppressed so she can sing the track with a microphone. This feature is designed for use with our PC but we can't seem to get it to work with the computer microphone. Her voice doesn't come out through the speakers. I have tried many hook-ups but can't get it right. Do I need special software, splitters, adapters?? I'd appreciate any response. Thank you,
