trying to record with mic but having PROBLEMS!

i just got a 'sony f-v420' dynamic microphone, which i want to use for simple recording on my laptop, however when i plugged it in to an amp and turned it on, no sound was made, and same with the computer...
also how do you get the recording program 'cubase' to use an external mic and not just the in built computer mic?
