USB Rockstar band microphone with my pc

What kind of microphone do i need in order to make my pc into my own little karaoke machine? I downloaded "UltraStar" and currently use my Skype voice chat mic to sing and it works, but it's kinda dorky looking. LOL! I bought a usb mic and went to system set up, and it is set up correctly, it just isn't giving me any "output" sound. Is that the right term? I can't hear myself through the speakers, and the program is not registering that i am singing at all. Do I need an amplifier? I know people do it and they sell the equipment, but what do I need? I am running a Windows XP home system.
