Why or how do electret microphones degrade or stop working?

(Frisco TX 75034)

I have three different microphones, two in headset units and one in a speakerphone, that have all either stopped working or have degraded significantly. Is it possible that the electret material (described as a solid dielectric material that exhibits persistent dielectric polarization--meaning it holds a permanent charge) can gradually lose that charge over a few years, and therefore become non-operative? I can't visualize any other reason why my microphones have all become useless.
